Its so rare for someone to be the smartest person in the room and also the kindest. Neil was both. Neil was a rare doctor who was also a humanist and a true renaissance man. He treated me when he was working in Goshen NY and for many years I drove 3 hours to the Bronx as I only trusted him with my eyes. We developed a friendship and I deeply valued his opinions and the hours we spent talking. His interest in languages, art, business, and life in general and his great spirit were so unique and he was a wonderful person to confide in or get great opinions from. I went online today to get the address to refer a friend to his care and was planning to text him when I saw the heartbreaking news. Such a loss for medicine, NYC, and the world. I will never forget his manners, intelligence, and humble charm. He literally saved my vision but, even more, he touched my life and restored my faith in doctors. Much love and condolences to his family friends patients and all who will miss him.

I only learned this shocking news 3 days ago. I'm devastated. We used to laugh so much together like kids and I got to see many sides of him. To me, Neil is my best friend, my brother, my father figure, and my teacher. He's definitely the type people look up to and wants to keep in their close circle so they can become better. God sent him to me to teach me about true love, compassion, humility, contribution and never giving up. My deep condolence to Neil's family. In my eyes and I believe many others, he lived a legendary life.

I first met Neil at Lenox Hill during our internship year. I can still see him walking down the hall in his loosely tied Timberland boots, scrubs and a single piece of paper in his hand with a list of his patients. He had a big smile with a hint of mischievousness. We became friends. His fun-loving attitude and positive energy were infectious. During residency he would always make an extra effort to check in on me and catch up at various academic functions and ophthalmology events. I looked up to him very much. He had a rare and remarkable gift for connecting with people which served him well. Neil knew everyone in New York. And everyone loved Neil. My deepest sympathies to the Patel family. You raised a good one. I know you are extremely proud of him.

I’ve been dreading this since I found out you were gone. I have never worked with anyone more driven than you. You, Dr. Rapp and Dr. Steinberg taught me so much and the reason why I love working in ophthalmology. You believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself and pushed me to be my best at all times. There was never a dull moment working with you, watching you thrive and grow your practice was amazing. You were truly an amazing person and the best boss I’ve ever had. This one hit very close to my heart because I was so proud of everything I learned with you! I love you and pray you can finally rest. Das it! Xo

Neil and I did our ophthalmology residency together. I was a year ahead of him, but he quickly became one of my best friends and mentors. We both lived on the same floor and were essentially neighbors. We used try to somehow finish our morning patients so we could go run out and get sushi, or at least a bag of dried mangos. We would talk about patients, cases or just life. Even though I was a year ahead of him, if I had a tough case I needed help with, I would go to Neil. He was a generous soul who always took care others. I finished residency in the spring of 2008. My younger brother was scheduled to start his residency that following summer. I never had any concerns, because I knew Neil would take care of him as though he was his own brother. That’s person who Neil was, and I will always miss him.

My deepest condolences to Neil's family. I first knew Neil as his attending during residency at New York Eye & Ear, but we quickly became friends. As others have said, he was kind, smart, funny and a very talented surgeon and clinician. While he certainly left his mark in service to his patients, he also left one with his staff, friends, colleagues and everyone he came in contact with. As professors, we always strive to inspire our mentees but we don't always expect to be so inspired by them. I'll miss conversations about life with Neil: he was relentlessly generous, persistent and optimistic. His successes always impressed me, but they were never a surprise. Rest in peace,

We laughed together during our time as co-residents at New York Eye & Ear, and supported each other during the difficult times. He was the one who gave me the idea to set up my business the way that I did, and it has succeeded because Neil was always right. Neil and I were co-residents at the New York Eye & Ear Infirmary. After graduation, we both moved to southern California for our respective fellowships. Even though we had lived and worked together during residency, it was that fellowship year in which we became close friends. In typical "work hard play hard" fashion, Neil worked all week and then drove up to LA every Friday and Saturday night when he wasn't on call. I'll never forget the fun times we had- our 2010 trips to Miami, San Diego and Las Vegas. Most of all, I will never forget what lengths Neil was willing to go to for me when I was going through hard times. I am grateful to have known Neil and have him teach me the meaning of forgiveness and friendship.

Wow this feels so unreal. Im so grateful to be able to be in your life for almost 5 years working in your practice and been your scribe. Since the beginning you never stopped surprising me, that day you gave me the opportunity to go with you to the OR i will never forget. Such an amazing surgeon and on top great rapper lol Your playlist was full of "trap" music while doing your 3 mins cataract surgery's. You was such a risk taker and thats what made you, YOU. All those complicated surgery's that probably no one would have never touch you did and I felt in some cases you did magic. Despite the amazing achievements you did throughout your life, your personality and how humble you was with everyone has had such an impact in many like myself. I have never seen and probably will never see a boss / CEO like you were to all your employee. So many laugher throughout all this years and Im glad to be able to have such great memories with you. The ones that weren't recorded will always be in my heart. In a few occasions you mention how I was the daughter you never had and to me that meant a lot. Thank you for everything you did for me, I wish I would have thank you more in person. I hope you knew you already impacted the world with your service and your hard work and dedication will pay off forever. May you rest in peace.

My deepest condolences to Mr and Mrs Patel and family. I never took for granted Neil's words to me about his love and admiration for his mother's influence throughout his life which he spoke of many times to me as I was facing some challenges as a mother to offer me his support and encouragement. I met Dr Patel at Crystal Run. It was there that he told me of his plans for the future regarding his own practice, for me to look him up when I was ready to return to work and I'd always have a job with him. Turns out I made my career with him. NEIL HAS BEEN MY FRIEND for 9 years. He always had a place for me. The best of my resume is because of him. In everything he planned, the words I or me never came out of his mouth, it was always WE and OUR. Dr Patel, you always had a clear vision of what your future would be, you always wanted those around you to be part of it. It was never we work for you but WITH YOU, and trust me when I say, we love you for that. I never met a man like you who just really and truly looked at those who worked with you as your family, who took it personally when one left , wanted to know why, so you could better yourself, so people wanted to stay. You are amazing in every way and will be so missed. I know it is right and just to believe you are in your forever home, just wish you didn't have to go so soon.
Until we meet again, we will make you proud. NYOPH all the wayyyy

Deepest condolences to the Patel family. I was incredibly saddened to hear about this. Neil and I were fellows together during our Retina training. He was a great guy and acted like a big brother to me during our training together. I remember his warm laugh and great sense of humor. He was very caring for patients, and a great surgeon. He helped save the vision of many, many patients. Thank you for the great memories and laughs, my friend. May you rest in peace.

Incredibly sad to hear the news of Neil’s sudden tragic passing. Condolences to his family, close friends and co-workers… I did business with Neil for many years repping devices he used on his surgical patients… but saw Neil as so much more than an extremely gifted surgeon and astute clinician. Neil, to me, was one of the most interesting guys in the world …with diverse interests like exotic travel, chess, fine cooking/dining, surfing, and entrepreneurship..I’ve never seen a surgeon build such a busy thriving practice in just a few years..His success was created by virtue of his compassionate nature, warm personality, and passion providing quality eyecare in areas of NYC that were historically underserved. His empathy and ambition were second to none, and his goal to help as many people in the community regain their vision was inspiring. He was kind enough to invite me to his office holiday party a couple years ago where i snapped this photo of him toasting his growing work family..his pride in his NYOPH team was palpable. We are all heartbroken for our loss and pray for Neil, and all who loved him. Rest In Peace ..

Dr. Patel was truly one of the smartest, most compassionate and inspirational people I have ever met. Each time I interacted with him he was always a fully engaged listener whi showed genuine interest and concern in what I had to say; he often went out of his way to show me interesting cases. He was such an amazing person to everyone who knew him, an incredible man who built NYOPH as a cohesive organization more than a company to serve underserved of New York City, a huge loss to the ophthalmology community. You will always be an inspiration to us all

My deepest condolences and sympathy to the Patel family. Neil was a great friend to me over 30 years from high school at WHRHS to college at Columbia and then life in NYC and California. He was so intelligent, dedicated, creative, friendly, welcoming, and always such a pleasure to be around. I will always vividly remember his infectious laugh and smile. He was truly a great man and his early departure from this world has left a tremendous void. I'm so deeply saddened that he's no longer with us, but so deeply grateful for all the memories that we shared that I will always remember so fondly. Rest in peace, brother.

I was Neil's co-resident during residency. He was my friend and family through residency and beyond. He was a rock for many of us and helped us innumerable times to get through stressful situations with his kindness and infectious laughter. I do not have any memories of my life as a resident without Neil in it...always laughing and lighting up the room. We started solo practices at the same time but in 2 different states and he was always there to support and encourage me. He visited me in AZ 2 years ago and he had not changed one bit. He was as charming and kind as ever. Neil, you will be missed immensely but you will always live on in our hearts and memories. You were a rare gem Neil and my life is a better one for having known you.

I texted you immediately when I heard of you passing, I hoped that it wasn’t true, that they were mistaking and it was someone else. I am so sorry that we have lost you in our medical community. You will be missed, thank you for being so accessible for referrals, questions and chats about what’s going on professionally and personally. I was so looking forward to growing older and telling patients “You’re in good hands I’ve been referring to him for 30 years!” Gone too soon, I’m sorry for your family that grieves you.

I honestly can't begin to put into words how I feel about you no longer being here with us. 7 years of working by your side and we were supossed to start again, we were supossed to be joking around and working again and now you are gone. We had plans after new years to start over and you wrote to me and told me you were so happy and I agreed because so was I. You gave me an opportunity to work with you after I decided to move back to NY from Dom.Rep and I had zero medical experience. I will never forget my job interview because back then It was the start of it all and you personally sat and interviewed me. You asked me if I thought I would be able to handle a job in the medical field, you warned me that in no time you would grow into a busy practice and you didn't want to waste time training someone that was not sure if they would be up for the entire ride. You challenged me and said "If you work hard and become an asset to my practice and I promise you that you will get everything you deserve and rather than you needing this job I would need you". You kept teaching me and helping me grow not just in the field but as a person in general. You would always tell me how you knew you were never meant to work for anyone because your mouth would get you in trouble, you were born to lead. You would look at me scribing for you with 3 ipads and brag about it to people because you were so proud of me and of the growth that you had seen. Whenever you were having a bad day the girls would always send me to tell you whatever they needed you to know and I was never scared to approach you because we just got along and understood each other and the way we worked. You trusted me with so much. You always laughed and said you were my kids godfather and even during the pandemic you randomly would write to me to make sure we had everything we needed. You made such a huge impact in my life and I'm not sure that you even understood how huge it was. I looked at you with so much admiration and respect because you will put in the work consistently to get to where you were at right now. I would ask you how would you handle so much? How would we divide Dr. Patel between all offices because your patients only wanted you el Doctoi like they would tell you, you would look at me and say this is my life this is what I love to do I have no time for anything else I will rest when it's my time to go and it's so hard to swallow this pill and believe that you no longer are a phone call or text away. I am truly thankful that I had told you multiple times in life how grateful I was for everything and all you ever helped me with or did for me. I will always remember our lunches and birthdays and inside jokes. I will forever be grateful to have met such a great person. I will miss you and working with you. Now you can finally rest. You told me you would never retire but this is not what I had in mind. I am still in shock and I will always remember you with great admiration and love. Thank you for being a part of my life. May your soul rest in peace...

Being a fellow Columbian, rower, and NYC-trained Ophthalmologist, I had known Neil since he came to Morningside Heights campus in 1994 as a freshman. I was a junior at Columbia College, and remember Neil as one of the nicest guys on the crew team, who always worked hard to achieve his academic and athletic goals. Back in the day, we even rowed in the same boat a handful of times. It was interesting to see our common path over time, and then years later see him professionally at our national Eye meetings. Despite the challenges a career in medicine brings, Neil always kept his gentle and outgoing demeanor and was well-liked by his colleagues. He will certainly be sorely missed by his friends, family, and patients he cared for over the years. Lighting a Light Blue candle in honor of a friend and fellow Columbia Lion, and sending deepest sympathies to his loving family.

My deepest condolences to the friends and family of Dr. Neil Patel. Dr. Patel was always a supportive colleague and mentored me when I first started working in the underserved area of the South Bronx. I found comfort knowing a professional and highly skilled retinal surgeon was just down the street from me and was a welcoming referral site. Dr. Patel would invite me to his holiday parties and I could tell his staff really looked up to his leadership. He sent our office gift baskets during the holiday season which our staff all appreciated. He was a warm and positive person to be around. He treated his colleagues with respect and always had a fun spirit. Dr. Patel reached out to me one month before his passing with very kind words that I will always remember him by. The news of Dr. Patel’s death is tragic beyond comprehension. Neil had an impact on more lives than he was ever aware, but I truly hope he knew how deeply and positively he affected mine. Neil took me under his wing and made me a better doctor, for which I will be grateful the rest of my life. It was the joy of my professional career to work alongside Neil and to help him realize his dream of creating his empire. With offices in all corners of NYC, I can assuredly say that his dream came true.
We had our moments of disagreement, as two brothers would, but it was only because I loved him like family. He was generous, provided outstanding health care to the underserved, took on challenging cases that other doctors avoided, and was a constant educator. Neil‘s teachings will stay with me forever as I use his exact words to counsel my patients or whenever I refer a patient for an FA and Avastin. I will remember the good times with Neil with every mention of plátano or mangú, every time I hear a song from his personally-DJ’ed work playlist, or every time anyone says “das it!”
Neil, now that you finally have the time to relax, I hope you are playing chess with the greats and surfing bigger waves than you ever dreamed. I will miss you deeply, Papi; you are loved forever.

Neil was a deeply respected and highly cherished colleague. His sudden departure leaves an enormous, incomprehensible void in our ophthalmic community. Neil was modest and soft spoken, but immeasurably talented. He dedicated himself to his patients, many of whom depended on his efforts to help them overcome cultural barriers, that otherwise limited their access to care. There is no way to express in words the legacy he leaves behind and how much he will be missed.

I have two memories of Neil permanently ingrained in my mind. The first was in high school, sitting behind him in Calculus. He would turn around and tell me excitedly that he had figured out how to prove or derive something related to e (the mathematical constant). That's the first time I realized Neil was super smart, and not just the goof with the charming, mischievous grin! The second was in college, stopping by to see Neil at his first crew race. We were all freshmen, and still nervous/excited about college and the future. I remember meeting Mr. and Mrs. Patel there as well. My thoughts are with you, Mr. and Mrs. Patel, with Sima, and the rest of Neil's family and close friends.

My deepest condolences to Neil's family. I enoyed our friendship since he came to work with me as a physics student in Columbia and then as a resident and most recently as a colleague. Always warm, friendly, and funny. A good soul to brighten any occasion.

Thank you for being my fierce leader, warm mentor, and goofy friend. You are the best boss I ever had, and no one will ever come close to being what you have been for me. I will miss all our deep talks about art and life. I miss being silly with you -- we always acted like children whenever we could. You were the best of us. I can only hope to aspire to your kindness and empathy.

It is hard to still comprehend that Dr. Neil has left us. As a cousin, I always and will continue to brag about his passion and accomplishments. HE must have different plans for Neil. May the ALMIGHTLY shower him with his choicest blessings and give the courage to the family members to withstand this loss. Jai Swaminarayan.

I'm so incredibly sad to know of his passing, I will always remember Neil's infectious smile, he lit up the room with his humor and wit wherever he went. We were residents together and I'm glad I got to spend that time with him. I hope he finds peace on the other side. My heartfelt condolences to the family, he left us way too early.

Neil Patel RIP brother. Will miss you. I hope you are at peace. Will miss that smile, your chuckle and your generous nature. We were “the triad”…you, me and Mike Sorace. We rocked Med School and had some fun doing it. I wouldn’t be me today without you. I am tremendously saddened, shocked, confused and in disbelief.

Dr.Patel, you are extremely serious and rigorous about your work, and even discuss your work at mealtimes. Every time I read your story posted on Ins, you are always watching the same scenery and listening to soothing music. This should be a way for you to relax yourself. I hope you have no pain or trouble on the other side of the world. Remember the way you smile when you take off your mask.

We were so shocked by Neil’s early departure from Earth; he was a really good friend and we’ve known each other since our NYEEI days. He was special and talented. My little brother, I will miss you so much! You impacted so many in too short of time. God bless your family and friends/pts that will always cherish you. JSK!—Jai

Dr Patel,
Your loss is a huge one. Your presence, your smile, your jokes, your laughter will be missed. The way you made it a point to connect with every single one of your patients, learning their language and funny sayings to keep them at ease was a special gift that I admired. Thank you for all the advice, all the help and encouragement throughout all these years and for being such an amazing person I not only considered a colleague but a friend. You will never be forgotten.
